Cannon Beach is the day's anchor. Haystack Rock rises just offshore: a 235-foot basalt sea stack formed by lava flows over 15 million years ago, claimed to be the third tallest intertidal structure in the world. You'll walk the sandy beach, watch birds circle the rock, and if the tide is out, explore tide pools full of marine life. The town itself is small enough to browse on foot, with several eateries scattered along the main street where you can grab lunch on your own. The guide will point you toward options, but the choice and timing are yours.

The afternoon heads south on the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway. A stop at Neahkahnie Overlook gives you the highest drive-able viewpoint on the Oregon coast. Then comes Oswald West State Park, named after the governor who fought to keep the entire Oregon coastline public. Depending on the tide and group pace, you may hike a short forested trail along Short Sand Creek to Smugglers Cove, a driftwood-strewn beach, or visit Hug Point to see a small coastal waterfall if the tide is low. The van returns you to downtown Portland by late afternoon.
