You navigate your own route with a GPS app that maps hidden mines, springs and wild mustang herds.

A 4-hour off-road adventure in Mammoth Lakes where you drive a Polaris RZR through alpine trails and backroads, using the Polaris Ride Command App to chart your own path to sites like June Lake Loop, Chidago Canyon Petroglyphs and Bodie Ghost Town. Helmet, GPS navigation and vehicle-specific safety gear are provided. You choose between the RZR XP4 1000 or RZR XP 1000 at checkout.

The experience

You're behind the wheel of a Polaris RZR (either the four-seat XP4 1000 or the two-seat XP 1000) with the Polaris Ride Command App loaded on the in-dash GPS. The app is not a fixed itinerary. It's a mapping tool that lets you pick your own route through the terrain around Mammoth Lakes. Some riders head straight for the June Lake Loop or the Petroglyphs in Chidago Canyon. Others aim for Bodie Ghost Town. The app shows you technical terrain, detailed overlays and the kind of backroads most visitors never find: unnamed freshwater springs, abandoned mines, places where wild mustangs still run. The automatic four-wheel-drive handles the rough ground. You handle the decisions.

The vehicle comes equipped with a helmet, GPS navigation and all the safety gear specific to the RZR you've chosen. Bring closed-toe shoes, long sleeves and pants. A neck gaiter or bandana sits under the helmet to keep dust out. The 4-hour window is yours to use: some people spend it covering ground, others linger at a single discovery. Weather in the mountains shifts fast, so pack layers. Water, snacks, sunscreen and bug spray are your call to bring along.

This is not a guided tour where someone else picks the stops. You navigate, you decide the pace, and you're responsible for your own route. The terrain demands at least a moderate level of physical fitness and comfort handling a vehicle on uneven ground. If you've never driven an off-road machine before, the automatic transmission and power steering make it manageable. If you're experienced, the technical trails will test your skills.

Is this one for you?Choose the four-seat RZR XP4 1000 if you're bringing family or friends. Pick the two-seat RZR XP 1000 if you want a nimbler vehicle for solo or two-person exploration. Either way, the app-based navigation means you're not following a guide's schedule. You set the pace and the stops.

Top questions

Can I choose which Polaris RZR I want to drive?

Yes. You pick either the RZR XP4 1000, which seats four, or the RZR XP 1000, a two-seater, when you book. Both have automatic four-wheel-drive and the same in-dash GPS system.

What is the Polaris Ride Command App and how does it work?

The Ride Command App is built into your vehicle's GPS and lets you map your own route through the Mammoth Lakes area. It shows technical terrain, detailed overlays and navigation to sites like June Lake Loop, Chidago Canyon Petroglyphs and Bodie Ghost Town, plus unmarked locations like hidden springs and old mines.

Do I need off-road driving experience to do this?

No. The automatic transmission and power steering make the RZR manageable for novices, though you should have a moderate level of physical fitness. Experienced riders will find technical trails that challenge their skills.

What gear and clothing do I need to bring?

Wear closed-toe shoes, long sleeves and long pants. A neck gaiter or bandana under your helmet keeps dust out. Bring layers like a lightweight jacket in case the weather changes, plus water, snacks, sunscreen and bug spray in a backpack.

Can I bring passengers with me?

Only if you book the RZR XP4 1000, which seats four people. The RZR XP 1000 is a two-seater. Both vehicles are rented as a single unit, and all passengers need to wear helmets.
