The Experience
“You’ll feel it in your stomach,” our captain grinned as we shuffled onto the Sea Rocket’s deck, harnesses clinking. I was still half-laughing at my own nervous joke about losing my sunglasses to the Atlantic — didn’t happen, but I gripped them tight anyway. The boat barely left the dock before the crew started their safety talk (they’re quick but not rushed, you know?), and then we were already out past the last row of umbrellas. Ocean City’s boardwalk shrank behind us so fast it almost felt like cheating — no endless boat ride, just straight to the good part.
The wind up there is different. It’s colder than you expect, but not sharp. My legs dangled while we floated up — 800 feet is a lot when you’re looking down at tiny dots that are actually people on the beach. Our guide, Li, pointed toward Assateague Island and said if we squinted we might catch wild ponies. I tried (no luck), but did spot a pod of dolphins slicing through the water below. For a second everything went quiet except for gulls and this weird clicking sound from my harness that I only noticed because it was so still.
I wasn’t sure if I wanted to get dipped in the ocean on the way down — turns out you can just shout “stay dry!” or “go for it!” and they’ll listen. We went for it. Cold splash on my toes, salt spray everywhere, and Li laughed when I yelped (not exactly graceful). The landing was smoother than I expected; no awkward flopping into water or anything — just back onto the deck like nothing happened. There were GoPros everywhere but honestly, I kind of liked not worrying about photos for once.
I still think about that view sometimes — how small everything looked from up there, how big the sky felt. If you’re even half-curious about parasailing in Ocean City, just do it. You’ll probably laugh at yourself too.
