This is your chance to try stand up paddleboarding in Oahu’s historic Haleiwa Bay with expert guides who make everyone feel welcome. Watch for Hawaiian green sea turtles along Anahulu stream, pick up real paddling skills, and hear stories about local traditions—all while sharing laughs with fellow travelers as the sun sets over the North Shore.
“Lean forward just a bit—there you go!” Our instructor grinned as I wobbled on the board, toes gripping the surface while sunlight bounced off the water. The bay felt calm, but there was a gentle buzz from other paddlers chatting nearby, some laughing at their first attempts to balance. We started on shore, learning how to hold the paddle and what to do if we fell in (which, honestly, made me feel better right away).
Pushing out into Haleiwa Bay, the water turned glassy and warm under my feet. A couple of kids from another group pointed excitedly at something moving near the mangroves—a huge green sea turtle gliding by so quietly I almost missed it. Our guide shared stories about these turtles and how they’ve been part of this stream for generations. He also pointed out plants along the banks that locals use for cooking or medicine.
The best part? Nobody cared if you were new or nervous. Some folks in our group had never tried stand up paddle before; others looked like pros. The guides kept an eye on everyone, offering tips and encouragement without making it feel like a lesson. By sunset, the sky turned soft orange and pink over the water, and even those who’d started out shaky were paddling with big smiles.
No experience is needed—beginners are welcome! Certified instructors will teach you everything you need to know before heading onto the water.
Turtle sightings are common but not guaranteed since they’re wild animals. Guides will help spot them if they’re around.
You don’t need to know how to swim; lifejackets are available upon request and instructors are certified lifeguards for your safety.
It’s a good idea to bring a water bottle and reef-safe sunscreen. All necessary equipment is provided for you.
Your outing comes with all paddleboarding gear—board and paddle included—plus bottled water so you can stay refreshed out on the stream. If you want extra peace of mind, just ask for a lifejacket at no extra charge. And when it’s time to learn or need help on the water, your certified instructor will be right there guiding you every step of the way.
