The experience

What makes this hike different is the rainforest itself: 75 acres of private Manoa Valley that stays off the public trail map. Most Oahu hiking companies run the crowded routes where groups pile up. This one moves through native forest where the canopy closes in and the volcanic slopes feel remote. The trail is a mild to moderate 2.5 miles one way, mostly dirt and mud underfoot, and takes about 3.5 hours total. You'll need sturdy shoes with real traction. The rainforest mud is slick.

The views open up as you climb: Konahuanui (the highest point of the Ko'olau range at 3,150 feet) rises above the trees, and on clear days you see Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Waikiki and the ocean stretching to the horizon. A professional nature guide walks with you and points out the rare and endemic plants that grow nowhere else. The trade winds keep the temperature around 80 degrees year-round, but rain showers move through fast. A rain poncho is included for that reason.

Round-trip transportation picks you up from Waikiki, Kahala or Aloha Tower and brings you back after the hike. You'll carry a hip pack, and the operator provides mosquito repellent, a rain poncho and bottled water. The hike suits families too. Children from age 3 are welcome, though above-average fitness helps on the mud and the elevation gain.
