The Experience

The day started early—Kona airport’s coffee still lingering on my breath as we boarded the quick flight to Oahu. I’d never flown between islands before; it’s fast, just enough time to look out and realize how blue the Pacific really is. Our guide, Kaleo, met us right at Honolulu airport holding a sign (and grinning like he knew we were about to get our minds blown by history). He was born here, he said, and you could tell—he pointed out small things on the drive, like where his uncle used to fish near Pearl Harbor before all this became a place people visit from around the world.

I didn’t expect the hush that fell over everyone when we reached the USS Arizona Memorial. Even though there were other groups nearby, it felt oddly quiet—just water lapping under us and the sound of flags flapping. Kaleo told us about families who still come every year. I caught myself staring at oil spots rising through the water (“tears of the Arizona,” he called them). It’s strange how something so peaceful can feel so heavy at the same time. We had time to wander through exhibits too—I got stuck reading letters written by sailors before the attack. Didn’t think those would hit me so hard.

Lunch was simple but good—sandwiches and fruit, nothing fancy but honestly I was grateful for a break in the shade. Afterward, we climbed aboard the Battleship Missouri Memorial. I kept running my hand along cold metal rails (maybe hoping some of that history would rub off). Standing where WWII ended felt surreal—Kaleo pointed out a spot on deck where Japan surrendered. He joked about how his grandpa would’ve never believed tourists would one day line up for photos here.

The Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum surprised me most—tight corridors, that diesel smell clinging to everything. You have to duck through hatches; I banged my head once and laughed with another guy in our group who did exactly the same thing five minutes later. The whole day felt like moving through layers of memory—some joyful, some sobering—and honestly I’m still thinking about those oil drops days later.
