The experience

You learn the basics on land before pushing off from Mere Point in Brunswick. The guide covers stance, paddle technique and safety, then hands you a board, paddle, life jacket and leash. The paddle out crosses protected water where you'll see working lobster traps and oyster operations. The guide explains the history and ecology as you go. Cormorants, great blue herons, snowy egrets and osprey are common. Seals and jumping fish show up often enough that spotting them is part of the rhythm of the morning.

The route heads either north toward Whites Island or south to Mere Point's tip, depending on wind and tide. Midway through, you beach on an island or uninhabited section of Birch Island. The guide sets out homemade hot muffins, tea and lemonade while you stretch and recover. Then comes the oyster farm stop: you'll see how they're grown, shuck a few yourself, and taste them fresh. Briny, sweet, cold from the water. This is the centerpiece of the tour, not an afterthought add-on.

The whole outing runs 2.5 hours on the water and land combined. Weather can shift the route or move the tour to a second location if conditions demand it. If the day turns too rough or rainy, you can reschedule or get a full refund. Bring your own snacks, sunscreen, bug repellent, water and a windbreaker or synthetic fleece. Wear shoes that stay on your feet when wet.
