The experience
Can you paddle the Everglades without a guide? Yes, Nine Mile Pond is built for it. You pick up your canoe, paddles and life jackets at the Flamingo Activities Booth, then launch into one of the park's most popular backcountry trails on your own schedule. The route winds through mangrove tunnels so narrow the branches close overhead, then opens into tranquil freshwater ponds where the wildlife is dense enough that you'll spot something within the first few minutes of paddling.
The trail is roughly four hours round-trip, but you set the pace: linger at a spot where turtles are sunbathing, or paddle straight through if you want to cover distance. Alligators, wading birds, fish and other native species move through the same water you're in, and the mangrove forest keeps the sun manageable even in warm months. All daytime rentals must return by 5 PM, so you have a firm end time to work with. Check-in happens between 8 AM and 3 PM at the Flamingo booth, where you'll also need to show a valid photo ID.

Is this one for you?The four-hour paddle moves at your own speed, so you can stop whenever wildlife appears or paddle straight through if you prefer distance over lingering. This works for anyone who wants to see the Everglades' backcountry without a guide's schedule, and for paddlers who'd rather navigate the mangrove tunnels themselves than sit in a motorboat.
Top questions
What wildlife will I actually see on the Nine Mile Pond trail?
Alligators, turtles, wading birds and fish are common throughout the route. The mangrove tunnels and freshwater ponds create habitat where these species live year-round, so encounters are frequent rather than rare.
Do I need paddling experience to rent a canoe at Nine Mile Pond?
No. The route is suitable for all fitness levels, and the water is calm: mostly flat freshwater ponds and slow-moving channels. The mangrove tunnels require some maneuvering, but the trail is designed for self-guided paddlers without prior experience.
What time should I arrive at the Flamingo Activities Booth?
The booth opens at 8 AM and closes at 3 PM. Arrive early if you want the full four hours to paddle, since all daytime rentals must return by 5 PM. Check-in includes paperwork, collecting your paddles and life jackets, and presenting a valid photo ID.
Can I paddle Nine Mile Pond in the afternoon?
Yes, but plan accordingly. If you check in at 2 PM, you'll have roughly three hours before the 5 PM return deadline. The trail takes about four hours to complete, so an early morning start gives you the most time to explore without rushing.
What's included in the canoe rental?
The two-person canoe, paddles and life jackets are all included. You provide your own water, snacks and sun protection. The mangrove canopy offers some shade, but bring a hat and sunscreen for the open pond sections.
