Take the wheel or help raise the sail on a smooth morning passage through Newport Harbor

The Schooner Aquidneck Morning Mimosa Sail is a guided sailing tour from Newport that passes Fort Adams, the Pell Bridge, Hammersmith Farm (JFK's former summer retreat), and Clingstone while you sit back or actively help crew the boat. The 80-foot schooner is built for smooth sailing, and water and soft drinks come with your ticket. Mimosas and beer are available to purchase. No two trips follow the same route because wind and tide shift the course each time.

Step-by-step itinerary

Morning sailing with scenic views

  • See Hammersmith Farm
  • Spot Clingstone island house
  • Enjoy light commentary
  • Relax, help raise sail or steer

The experience

The Aquidneck leaves Newport Harbor on a route that changes with the wind and tide, so each sail is different. You'll see Fort Adams, the largest coastal fortification in North America, the Pell Bridge spanning the harbor, Hammersmith Farm where President Kennedy spent summers, and Clingstone, a one-of-a-kind house built on its own island. The captain and crew point out each landmark and share the history as you move through the water.

You get to choose how involved you want to be. Sit back and relax on deck, help raise the sails, or take a turn at the wheel if you want hands-on time. The boat is designed to sail smoothly enough that seasickness is rarely an issue, and the crew keeps the pace comfortable for all fitness levels. Water and soft drinks are complimentary. Mimosas, High Noons, and Narragansett Beer are available to buy on board for $4 each.

Children are welcome from age 6, and infants can sail if they sit on an adult's lap. The tour runs about an hour and forty minutes, long enough to see the major sights without eating up your whole morning in Newport.

Is this one for you? This is a shared sailing tour, so you're on the boat with other passengers, and the route shifts with the wind and tide rather than following a fixed path. It suits anyone who wants to be part of the sailing experience (whether that means taking an active role at the wheel or simply watching the harbor pass by) without needing prior sailing knowledge.

What is Fort Adams and why is it worth seeing from the water?

Fort Adams is the largest coastal fortification in North America, and seeing it from the harbor gives you a view of its scale and position that you can't get from land. The schooner passes close enough for the crew to explain its history and role in Newport's past.

Can I actually help sail the boat, or do I just watch?

You can do both. The crew invites passengers to help raise the sails or take a turn at the wheel if you want to participate. If you'd rather sit and watch, that's fine too. The choice is yours.

What drinks are included, and what costs extra?

Water and soft drinks are complimentary. Mimosas, High Noons, and Narragansett Beer are available to purchase for $4 each.

Will I get seasick on this boat?

The Aquidneck is an 80-foot schooner built specifically for smooth sailing. The crew says queasiness is rarely an issue, and the boat is designed to move comfortably through the water even for passengers who are usually sensitive to motion.
