The experience
The tour starts with Newport's oldest amateur baseball stadium, still in use since 1908 and once home to players like Babe Ruth and Satchel Page. From there, the narrated route moves through the colonial district, passing the Touro Synagogue (the oldest in the United States, built in 1763 as a symbol of religious freedom), and the Stone Tower, a mystery structure with competing theories about whether it was a lighthouse, watchtower or house of worship. You'll decide for yourself as you pass it.
The tour follows Bellevue Avenue and Ocean Drive, the two routes that define Newport's Gilded Age landscape. Along the way you'll see Rough Point, tobacco heiress Doris Duke's summer estate and a landmark of her colonial preservation work; the Breakers, Newport's largest mansion; Marble House, the most expensive summer cottage ever built; and the Elms, a frequent filming location for HBO's Gilded Age series. A short break at Brenton Point State Park, a 90-acre former estate at Newport's southern tip, gives you ocean views and a moment to step out of the van.
The route also passes the International Tennis Hall of Fame, housed in the historic Newport Casino that once anchored summer social life for the seasonal elite. Throughout the 15-mile drive, the guide explains the Gilded Age itself: why Newport became the destination for Mrs. Astor's "400" and what drew America's wealthiest families to build here. The air-conditioned van keeps the group small and the pace unhurried, a contrast to crowded tour buses.
