Guided snowmobile tour in Newberry

  • Visit Paulina Falls waterfall
  • Explore Paulina Peak summit
  • Tour Newberry National Volcanic Monument

The experience

Newberry National Volcanic Monument sprawls across Central Oregon as the largest shield volcano in the Cascade Mountain Range, and a snowmobile is how you cover the ground. The four-hour tour strings together the caldera's natural features: Paulina Falls drops into the landscape, Paulina Lake sits in the basin, and the Big Obsidian Lava Flow spreads across the terrain as a raw scar of black rock. Your guide chooses the route based on conditions and your group's pace, so the ride adapts to who is on the snowmobile behind you.

Weather permitting, the tour climbs toward Paulina Peak at 7,989 feet, the highest point in the monument. The ascent is not guaranteed (snow, wind and visibility decide whether the summit run happens on your day), but the lower trails and the falls are the core of the ride. Trails exist for all skill levels, so whether you have ridden before or this is your first time on a snowmobile, the guide keeps the group together and adjusts the pace.

Bring snow clothes as you would for a day in the mountains. The snowmobile, helmet and goggles are provided. If the tour stops at Paulina Lake Lodge, food and beverages there are not included in the price.
