That’s how our New York City Mafia food tour started — inside John’s of 12th Street, all dim lights and the smell of simmering tomato sauce clinging to your jacket. Our guide, Joe (retired NYPD — you could tell by his walk), slid into stories so easily I almost forgot we were on a tour. He pointed at a corner booth and just said, “That’s where Valenti sat before it went sideways.” I didn’t know if I should laugh or shiver.

The evening air outside was sticky, even for Manhattan. We wandered through Little Italy and Nolita, Joe weaving in bits about the Feast of San Gennaro and how the neighborhood’s changed (“You can still get a decent cannoli if you know where to look,” he grinned).
