She had that easy New Orleans warmth and a laugh that made you want to stay longer. I’d just told her I liked jasmine but not too sweet, and she grinned like she’d heard that before. The room was filled with little bottles and the faintest swirl of something floral and spicy in the air — not strong, just there if you paid attention. She handed me a lab coat (felt oddly official) and we got started on this perfume making class right in the heart of New Orleans.
I didn’t expect picking from over 300 oils to feel so personal — it’s weirdly intimate, sniffing things and realizing what memories pop up. There was one oil that reminded me of my grandmother’s garden after rain. We each made three blends (I got overexcited and nearly mixed two that probably shouldn’t go together), then had to pick one to bottle as our signature scent. Naming it was honestly the hardest part; Denise laughed when I suggested “Mardi Nose” — maybe not my best pun.
They keep your formula on file, which is kind of comforting if you fall in love with your creation. You leave with a little gift bag (mine smelled like vanilla for days) and a certificate that feels more meaningful than it should. Walking out into the sticky New Orleans afternoon wearing something you made yourself… I still catch hints of it sometimes on my scarf at home and it takes me right back. Funny how scents do that.
