The Experience

Li was already laughing when we fumbled with our helmets outside Tin City — I guess it’s obvious we’re not locals. She showed us how to start the electric mopeds (it’s easier than I expected), and then we just rolled out along the waterfront. There was this salty tang in the air, and a couple of pelicans fighting over fish scraps near the dock. I tried to say “grazie” to a shop owner as we zipped past, but probably butchered it — Li grinned anyway.

The city feels different from a moped. We passed Crayton Cove and slowed down; you could smell coffee drifting from a little café, even though it was already warm enough for iced drinks. At Naples Pier, we parked and walked out over the sand — I didn’t expect how soft it’d feel under my shoes. The water was that pale blue you see in postcards but never quite believe is real until you’re there. Some kids were chasing gulls and their laughter echoed off the wooden planks.

We rode by Palm Cottage (Li pointed out its weird old shutters — apparently it’s one of the oldest houses here), and then cruised down Third Street South where everyone seemed dressed up for brunch or maybe just for each other. The whole thing went by faster than I wanted. There’s something about feeling the wind on your face while someone local points out tiny details you’d never notice alone. I still think about that breeze sometimes.
