The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the way the morning light hit the rows of vines just outside Yountville — kind of golden but not too showy, you know? We’d barely started pedaling our electric bikes when our guide, Jen, pointed out a hawk perched on a fence post. She knew everyone along the road; drivers waved as we cruised by (I guess that’s normal here). The e-bikes felt like cheating at first but honestly, I was grateful for the boost up those gentle hills. There’s this soft hum from the tires and then the sudden quiet when you stop for water and realize it smells faintly like wild fennel everywhere.

We rolled into Monticello Vineyards after maybe 40 minutes — or less? Time gets weird when you’re distracted by all that green. The Corley family has been here since the late ’60s and their tasting host told us stories about Jay Corley planting his first vines. I tried to pronounce “Viognier” right (Li laughed when I tried — probably butchered it). The wine was crisp and cold; the glass sweated in my hand while we stood under an old oak tree. Tasting fees weren’t included but they said you could get them waived if you bought bottles — which some folks did after trying their Cabernet.

Afterwards, Jen offered to point out her favorite backroads if we wanted to keep riding (you can keep your e-bike for more exploring). Some people peeled off for lunch in Yountville; I just sat there for a minute, helmet still crooked, thinking about how different wine country feels when you’re not behind car windows. It’s quieter than I expected. I still think about that view down the valley — sun on my arms, grape leaves rustling. Not sure I’ll ever taste wine again without remembering it.
