The experience

The day starts with a drive across the Sandy River, whose headwaters sit on Mt. Hood's glacier. The guide explains how this river feeds the Columbia and why its dams were removed: context that shapes what you see as you enter the 85-mile Columbia River Gorge. The gorge itself is the frame: waterfalls, basalt columns, orchards, and the river running below, with the plant life changing noticeably as you move east.

Vista House sits atop a basalt point with a 360-degree balcony and a 100-year-old sandstone building that calls itself the fanciest rest stop in the world. From there, the route passes Latourell Falls (a 249-foot hanging waterfall with columnar basalt), an 1880s logging ghost town with an operating post office, Wahkeena Falls, and then Multnomah Falls: the tallest waterfall in Oregon at 620 feet combined height. Entry is included. You walk to the base and stand in front of it without a ticket line. Oneonta Gorge, a slot canyon where plants grow that exist nowhere else, comes next. The guide points out smaller waterfalls as you pass, and you'll see Bonneville Dam, the first Public Works Administration dam on the Columbia, completed in 1938.
