The Experience

First thing I noticed: our guide, Jamie, actually waved at a fisherman he knew before we even got on the e-bikes. That set the tone. We weren’t just passing through Morro Bay — it felt like we were part of it for a few hours. Jamie asked what we wanted from the ride (I blurted out “sea otters!”), and off we went, helmets slightly crooked and all.

The air smelled salty but also kind of sweet — maybe eucalyptus? We zipped along the estuary path where the wind picked up and I had to squint. At one point, Jamie stopped us quietly and pointed: three sea otters floating on their backs, paws tucked in like they were holding secrets. We stood there for a minute just watching them drift. I didn’t expect to feel so calm staring at otters but here we are.

After that we rode up toward Morro Rock — it’s way bigger up close than it looks from town, almost hulking. There were pelicans everywhere and some kids tossing bread to gulls (Jamie gently told them bread isn’t great for birds; they giggled anyway). The private electric bike tour made it easy to stop whenever something caught our eye — like this tiny bakery near the Embarcadero where you could smell cinnamon even from outside. We looped through the upper village too, which gave us this wide view over rooftops and boats bobbing below. I still think about that view sometimes when I need a mental break.
