Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Factory Butte and Moonscape Overlook

The experience

Factory Butte sits in terrain that looks closer to the moon than anywhere else on Earth: vast expanses of badlands, geologic formations that shift color with the light, and the kind of solitude that has made these spots favorites for photographers and social media. The overlook at Moonscape (also called Skyline Overview) opens onto the San Rafael Swell, a visual expanse that only a handful of people knew about before it started appearing online. Both stops are safer and more easily reached with a guide who knows the terrain and a capable off-road vehicle that handles the route without strain.

The tour runs three hours total. You travel in a luxury 4x4 with a live guide who speaks English, Italian or Russian, and the vehicle does the work of getting you to places that would be difficult or slow to reach on foot. Bottled water is provided. Drones are welcome on this tour, so if you brought one, you can fly it here. Pickup is included, so you don't arrange your own transport to the starting point.

This route has become more popular in recent years but still offers the solitude and immersion in natural beauty that draws people to remote Utah backcountry, without the crowds of the more typical popular routes. The terrain is a photographer's landscape: the kind of place where the light and the geology do most of the work.
