The experience
We were already bouncing along the red dirt road when Don Mose, our guide, started humming something low and steady: almost like the wind itself. I’d seen pictures of Monument Valley before, but nothing hit me like the real thing: those sandstone towers just sitting there, huge and quiet, while the sun kept shifting shadows across them. Don pointed out a spot where John Wayne filmed a scene (he even did the walk for us, his hat was better though). The air smelled like dust and sagebrush, which I didn’t expect to notice so much.
I tried asking Don about the names of some of the formations in Navajo: Li laughed when I tried to repeat one back (I probably butchered it). He didn’t mind though. He told us stories about his childhood here, how his grandmother used to bring him out to these same rocks. There was this moment when he sang a short ceremonial song. It echoed off the canyon walls. Just for us and whoever else might be listening in that silence. I still think about that sound sometimes.
We stopped at places you can’t go without a Navajo guide: arches hidden behind other arches, petroglyphs you’d never spot on your own. Don had water ready for us every time we got back in the car (which was honestly nicer than I expected, it gets dry fast out there). The whole tour felt more like being shown around by someone who really lives it than any “tour” I’ve done before. Time got weird. I couldn’t tell if three hours passed or just one long afternoon.
