The Experience

"You’ll probably hear the sea lions before you see them," the guy at the rental shop grinned as he handed us splash jackets. He was right. Even before we slid our kayaks into the water, that deep barking echoed across the marina — kind of funny how quickly it became background noise. The guide gave us a quick run-through on steering (I was nervous I’d just spin in circles), then pointed out which way to paddle if we wanted a good shot at seeing otters floating in the kelp beds.

The first few minutes were honestly a little wobbly — my paddle kept dripping cold saltwater onto my knees, but I didn’t really care once we drifted past a clump of seaweed and saw an otter rolling around, cracking open something with its tiny paws. It smelled like ocean and sunscreen, and there was this weird mix of quiet and distant gulls yelling over each other. A couple of seals popped their heads up nearby; one stared at us so long I started laughing. I tried to get a photo but nearly dropped my phone in (thankful for that dry bag they gave us).

We didn’t rush. The bay is bigger than it looks from shore — you can just float for a while and watch the clouds move or try to race your friend (I lost). There were families out there too, some kids squealing every time a seal got close. At some point I realized my arms were tired but I didn’t want to head back yet. It’s easy to forget time out here. Even now, sometimes I remember that feeling — just drifting with the otters somewhere off Monterey.
