Sixty Minutes at Molokini, Then the Turtles Show Up

You board at Ma'alaea Harbor, snorkel Molokini Crater for over an hour, then move to turtle reefs where these animals are actually living and feeding. The boat is small, the guide is live, and lunch plus all gear and sunscreen protection are included. You're back by afternoon, having seen the reef without the crowds.

Step-by-step itinerary

Molokini snorkeling and turtle observation

  • Check in at Ma'alaea Harbor store
  • Snorkel at Molokini Crater for 60 minutes

The Experience

The catamaran leaves Ma'alaea Harbor early enough that you're on the water before the wind picks up, and the first hour is spent at Molokini Crater itself — a half-submerged volcanic rim that drops straight into water so clear you can see the reef structure from the boat. You snorkel for over an hour in one of Hawaii's most protected marine zones, where the coral and fish density is nothing like the crowded beach breaks. The group stays small, which means you're not fighting for space or waiting for someone to move out of your shot.

After Molokini, the boat heads to one or more reef sites where sea turtles actually live — not the kind of "maybe you'll see one" situation, but places where they're feeding and resting regularly. Your guide knows where to look and what you're seeing, offering live commentary that makes the difference between watching a turtle and understanding what it's doing. The whole day runs on the 54-foot Ocean Explorer, which has an open deck layout instead of railings and enclosed spaces, so you're not crammed in with forty other people.

Breakfast happens before you leave the dock — continental, nothing fancy, but it takes the edge off the early start. Lunch is a buffet served on board after snorkeling, and they keep the beverages coming all day. All the snorkel gear is provided and high-quality; they've also banned full-face masks for safety reasons, but the regular gear they supply works fine. One thing to know: reef-safe sunscreen only, and if you didn't bring your own, they sell it on board for thirteen dollars. The rule exists because the reef can't handle the chemicals in regular sunscreen, and it actually matters here.

Check-in is at the Pacific Whale Ocean Store in the Ma'alaea Harbor Shops, right next to the Maui Ocean Center Aquarium. You need to show up 60 minutes early so you can eat breakfast and get oriented before departure. Kids have to be at least seven years old and need an adult with them the whole time.

What’s included

Continental breakfast before boarding, snorkel time at Molokini Crater and turtle reefs, all snorkel equipment, buffet lunch on board, non-alcoholic beverages throughout the day, live commentary from the guide, and all taxes and fees. Reef-safe sunscreen is available for purchase if needed.
