The Experience
The day starts at Paddle Ridge in West Glacier at 8:30 a.m., where your guides load your gear into a shuttle for a 20- to 30-minute drive upriver to the launch point. Once there, the guides rig the boats, walk you through a safety orientation, fit you with a helmet and life jacket, and push off into the current. You spend the next few hours paddling through class II to IV rapids depending on where you put in, reading the water and working the paddle as the guides call out the line. The river here runs clear enough to see cutthroat trout hanging in the deep pools, and the walls of Glacier National Park rise alongside you as you float and paddle downstream.
Around midday you pull over on a beach for lunch—freshly prepared by the guides—and a chance to stretch and cool off in the water if the day is hot. The afternoon brings more rapids and more paddling, with the guides sharing what they know about the area and the wildlife that moves through it. By late afternoon you reach the campsite with time to spare. The guides set up your tent, prepare dinner, and you drift to sleep in your sleeping bag under open sky.
The second morning starts with coffee and a cooked breakfast in camp. After packing up, the day mixes relaxed paddling with occasional rapids to keep the pace varied. In peak summer the water is so clear you can spot fish at the bottom of the deepest sections, and the region holds bald eagles, westslope cutthroat trout, and sometimes bears cooling off in the shallows. Lunch comes midday, again prepared on the river. The final stretch brings more rapids and the chance to sit with the moment before you paddle toward takeout, where a shuttle returns you to Paddle Ridge by afternoon.
