The Experience

“Don’t worry, no one’s watching,” our instructor grinned as I tried to remember which foot went where during the bachata lesson at Mango’s in Miami Beach. The lights were low but colorful, kind of like a tropical storm had exploded inside the Mojito Room. I could smell fresh mint from someone muddling drinks nearby — honestly, that scent kept me going when my hips refused to cooperate. Our group was a mix of locals and out-of-towners; one couple next to us was celebrating their anniversary, and the guy kept apologizing for his two left feet. The guide (her name was Ana) teased him in Spanish, but it felt friendly, like she really wanted us all to loosen up.

After a while we got a break — mojito time. The glass was cold and sweating in my hand, sharp lime and sweet rum cutting through the heat outside (and maybe my nerves). They brought out platters of empanadas, cheese breads, and these crispy tostones with dipping sauce. I probably ate more than my share but nobody seemed to mind. There was this moment when the music shifted — you could hear the band warming up through the wall for later — and everyone just sort of paused to listen. It felt good sitting there with strangers who suddenly didn’t feel like strangers anymore.

Salsa class came after that (I thought bachata would be easier but turns out both are humbling). By 10pm they handed out wristbands for Mango’s Nightclub next door; under-21s had to head out then but most people stayed for the live band and DJs. The club itself is wild — neon everywhere, dancers on tables, people singing along whether they know Spanish or not. I left with my shirt sticking to my back from dancing so much and that minty mojito taste still lingering. I still think about how easy it was to just join in down here — no one cared if you messed up a step.
