Jam in Fort Lauderdale’s exclusive Celebrity Room with your own food and drinks

Learn to play congas in Fort Lauderdale at a two-hour audience participation show with no experience needed. The lesson covers the history of the instrument, then teaches you a basic rhythm pattern (Tumbao or Marcha) used across popular music, followed by a long play-along session to jazz, rock, Latin, soul, funk, R&B and pop. You take home a printed copy of the music to practice.

The Experience

The show opens with eight minutes on how congas shaped American music, then moves into the core lesson: learning to play one of the most common rhythm patterns in just 15 minutes. The instructor walks you through reading the notes and the hand technique, building from the ground up so anyone—regardless of age or prior experience—can pick it up. No instrument knowledge required.

After the lesson, you spend 60 to 70 minutes playing along with the band as they move through jazz, rock, Latin, soul, funk, R&B and pop. This is not watching a performance; you are playing the drums the whole time, applying what you just learned to real songs. The rhythm patterns you learned anchor the music, so the lesson becomes muscle memory the moment you use it.

Bottled water is provided. If you want to bring your own drinks (beer, wine or spirits for those 21 and over, in moderation), you can. The space is wheelchair accessible, and children as young as eight are welcome. If you're marking a birthday, anniversary or special occasion, the operator will decorate the room and provide the Celebrity Room space at no extra charge—bring food from a restaurant or pack your own, and they handle setup and cleanup.

What’s included

  • Bottled water.
  • a printed copy of the music and notes you learned.
  • the two-hour show with eight-minute history, 15-minute lesson and 60 to 70-minute play-along session.

Is this one for you? This is a shared audience participation show, not a private lesson, so you play alongside other people and the instructor leads the whole group through the rhythm together. It suits anyone who wants to actually play an instrument in a real performance setting rather than watch one, and who has two hours to spend learning and jamming without needing one-on-one instruction.

Top questions

How long is the actual lesson before I start playing along?

The lesson itself runs 15 minutes, covering how to read the notes and play a basic conga rhythm pattern. After that, you play along with the band for 60 to 70 minutes, so the full show is two hours.

Do I need to know how to play drums or read music before I come?

No experience is required. The instructor teaches you to read the notes as part of the lesson, and the rhythm pattern you learn is designed so anyone can pick it up in 15 minutes.

What happens during the play-along part after the lesson?

You play the congas along with the band as they perform jazz, rock, Latin, soul, funk, R&B and pop. You are playing the entire time, using the rhythm pattern you just learned to stay with the music.

Can I bring my own food and drinks?

Yes. Bottled water is included. You can bring your own food and beverages, or have them delivered from a restaurant. If you're 21 or over, beer, wine and spirits are welcome in moderation. The operator provides dishes, utensils, ice and napkins.

Is this suitable for children?

Children eight years and older can participate. Infants and small children can come along in a pram or stroller, and service animals are allowed.

Do I get anything to take home?

Yes. You receive a printed copy of the music and rhythm patterns you learned during the lesson, so you can practice at home.
