The experience

The tour starts at Far View Terrace, Mile Marker 15, inside Mesa Verde National Park, where you board an air-conditioned coach for a chronological journey through Ancestral Puebloan settlement. Your certified interpretive guide walks you through a pithouse village from around A.D. 600, then the pueblo and kiva development of the 9th and 10th centuries, and finally the Classic Pueblo era cliff dwellings built in the 13th century. The coach handles the driving and parking while you step out at Fewkes Canyon Overlooks to photograph Oak Tree House and Fire Temple, and walk around Sun Temple on foot.

The dwellings sit at 7,000 feet, so the day involves moderate walking on uneven ground and some elevation. Comfortable walking shoes matter. The tour runs 4 hours total and departs at either 8am or 1pm. Choose the time that fits your schedule when you book. Groups stay under 40 people, and the guide's job is interpretation, not just naming what you see: you get the architecture, the religious and ceremonial uses of the spaces, and how the Ancestral Puebloans adapted to the landscape over centuries.

The coach is wheelchair accessible, and ADA passengers visit Spruce Tree House and Chapin Mesa Museum instead of the standard overlooks. Infants can ride in a stroller or on an adult's lap.
