You'll learn three throwing techniques from a trained coach, throw hatchets at a target for an hour, and have access to craft beers between rounds. Hatchets are provided, safety is covered upfront, and the coaches adjust the difficulty based on how your throws land. No experience required, and the whole session is designed so most people hit the target within their first three throws.
The first thing that catches you when you walk in is how serious the setup looks — actual targets, actual axes, actual lanes — and then your coach hands you a hatchet and suddenly it's not theoretical anymore. Craft Axe Throwing in Memphis runs a three-part system: safety first (waiver, equipment check, demo), then technique (they teach three different throwing styles and watch your stance), and then the part that actually matters, which is the throwing itself. Most people stick the target in three throws or less, which sounds impossible until you're holding the hatchet and your coach is standing there saying "yeah, you've got this."
The coaches are called Axe Coaches and Axe Masters depending on how deep you want to go, and they're there the whole time — not hovering, but present. They'll reteach if you're drifting, run games if the group wants competition, and keep evaluating as you throw. It's not a one-demo-and-you're-on-your-own situation. The whole thing is built around the idea that anyone can do this, whether you've thrown an axe before (you haven't) or you're there with a group of friends who decided this sounded fun on a Tuesday night.
Between rounds you can grab a local craft beer and actually relax, which is the part that makes it social instead of just athletic. The hour moves fast — safety and technique take maybe fifteen minutes, and then you're throwing, watching other people throw, maybe talking trash if it's that kind of group. The facility is wheelchair accessible, and they're set up for groups of any size, from two people to corporate teams.
Your session includes a complete safety waiver and equipment check, a demo and intro, instruction in three throwing styles with stance evaluation, hatchets, games and rules, continuous coaching feedback, and access to local craft beers while you throw and relax with your group.
