Step-by-step itinerary
Mauna Kea summit sunset and stargazing
- Acclimate at Visitor Center
- Explore summit and watch sunset
- Descend to stargazing site
- Stargaze with expert guide and telescope
The experience
The tour starts at the Mauna Kea Visitor Center, where you spend time acclimating to the altitude while exploring educational displays about the mountain's observatories and its deep cultural significance to ancient Hawaiians. From there, you travel to the summit itself, home to world-renowned observatories, and watch the sunset sink into the clouds and horizon. The vans are luxury 4WD, and the guides are professionally trained and prioritize safety and personalized service.
After sunset, you descend to a stargazing site positioned between 13,000 and 9,000 feet, one of the best viewing locations on Earth. Your guide brings the stars to life with insights into the universe while you look through a professional telescope at celestial objects. Hot chocolate and local snacks are served during the stargazing. The whole experience runs 7 to 9 hours from pickup to return.
The tour has operated continuously since 1989 by a fully permitted local company. Groups stay small, and pickups are convenient from either Kailua-Kona or Waikoloa Beach Resort. A minimum of three guests is required to hold the tour. If fewer than three people book 24 hours before departure, the tour cancels unless existing guests pay the difference. Weather or road closures can cancel the tour before departure, in which case you receive a new date or full refund.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is the Mauna Kea Summit like when we get there?
The summit sits at nearly 14,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean and is home to world-renowned observatories. You explore the summit itself and watch the sunset sink into the clouds and horizon from that vantage point.
Can I see stars clearly through the professional telescope?
Yes. The stargazing happens at a lower-elevation site between 13,000 and 9,000 feet, positioned in one of the best night-sky viewing locations on Earth. The professional telescope reveals breathtaking celestial objects up close, and your guide provides insights into what you're seeing.
What should I bring or wear for this tour?
Bring your own warm layers: a sweater or hoodie, warm socks, a beanie, and gloves. Wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. A heavy-duty hooded parka is provided, but bring additional layers for comfort. Bring your own water to help prevent altitude sickness.
How long is the tour, and when do pickups happen?
The tour runs 7 to 9 hours total. Convenient pickups are available in Kailua-Kona or Waikoloa Beach Resort, and the company coordinates the timing with you at booking.
What's included in the price?
The tour includes a heavy-duty hooded parka, local snacks, and hot chocolate served during stargazing. A $20 per person stewardship fee supports the Center for Maunakea Stewardship and the mountain's care and preservation. Meals are not included, so eat a full meal before the tour begins.
What happens if the weather is bad or the summit is closed?
If weather or road closures prevent reaching the summit before departure, the tour is canceled and you receive a new date or full refund. If weather turns unfavorable during the tour but you can still proceed, the guide does their best to provide a great experience. If the summit becomes unreachable partway through, you receive a full refund or credit.
