The Experience

The first thing that hit me was how the light kept flickering through the leaves as our Limo-Van snaked along the Road to Hana. It’s not just a drive—617 curves, 54 one-lane bridges. You lose count after a while. Our guide, Kaleo, seemed to know every bump and story; he’d slow down for waterfalls or just to point out a patch of wild ginger. I caught myself grinning at nothing in particular—the air smelled like rain and something sweet I couldn’t name.

I didn’t expect the Hana Lava Tube (Ka’eleku Cavern) to feel so… quiet. The world above is all crashing surf and green chaos, but inside it’s cool and still. We followed Kaleo’s flashlight along the walls—lava frozen into strange shapes. He let us touch a bit of the stone (smooth, almost waxy), and I tried picturing what it must’ve looked like when it was all fire instead of rock. There was this moment where everyone just stopped talking at once—I liked that.

Lunch was on picnic tables with grilled chicken and ono fish (I went for seconds on the pineapple). Someone asked about taro fields we’d passed earlier; Kaleo told us his aunt still grows taro near Ke‘anae—he laughed when I tried pronouncing it right. After that we wandered Waiʻanapanapa State Park’s black sand beach. The sand gets everywhere but you don’t really care because the water is cold in a good way. Some people swam; I just watched waves smash against those weird sea arches. It felt like you could stay there all day but time moves different on this side of Maui.
