Feed butterflies hand-raised on an organic Hawaiian farm, not shipped in from the mainland

The Maui Butterfly Farm Tour is a 45-minute private tour at Hawaii's oldest butterfly farm, where you walk through a flight house to hand-feed and observe live Hawaiian butterflies bred and raised on-site. The farm is a certified Monarch Waystation focused on butterfly propagation, research and education, and it's the only place in the Islands where you can see live Hawaiian butterfly species in a walk-in flight house. Private tours are available; the guide speaks English.

Step-by-step itinerary

Butterfly farm visit and education

  • Visit butterfly production facility
  • See different types of Hawaiian butterflies
  • Feed butterflies in flight house
  • Learn about butterfly conservation efforts

The Experience

You arrive at 820 Olowalu Village Road, just past the Olowalu General Store on the way to Lahaina, and step into the only butterfly farm in Hawaii that runs private tours. The 45-minute experience centers on the walk-in butterfly flight house, where you hand-feed the butterflies moving around you. Unlike mainland farms that ship in stock from abroad, every butterfly here is home-bred and hand-raised on the farm's organic land, so you're seeing species endemic to Hawaii — the Hawaiian Monarch, the Kamehameha butterfly, and others found nowhere else in the Islands.

The tour moves through the production facility, where the guide explains how the farm propagates butterflies, conducts research, and educates visitors as part of its mission to save the species. You learn what it takes to raise these insects from the ground up, what they eat, how long they live, and why the farm's breeding program matters. The hands-on setup — feeding them yourself rather than watching through glass — is what sets this tour apart from the educational talks you might find elsewhere.

What’s included

  • Hands-on tour of the butterfly production facility.
  • access to the walk-in butterfly flight house.
  • hand-feeding live Hawaiian butterflies.
  • guide instruction on butterfly propagation, research and education.
  • a live English-speaking guide.
