The experience

The tour leaves Steamship Authority Terminal and immediately heads into Vineyard Haven's historic Main Street, winding toward West Chop and the outer harbor. At West Chop, you stop to see the lighthouse and the bluff overlooking the Elizabeth Islands: a spot built in for photos. From there the route carries you to Aquinnah Cliffs, where the painted clay cliffs rise above Noman's Island and the Elizabeth Islands. You can walk around the overlook, photograph the Aquinnah Lighthouse (which was moved to preserve it from erosion), and grab local seafood, burgers or ice cream at the nearby shops that support the local Wampanoag population.

The second half of the morning takes you through Edgartown, where you drive past the Old Whaling Church, the harbor and the charming shops and cottages that define the town's look. You stop in front of the Harbor View Hotel for sweeping views of the outer harbor and a rundown of the lighthouse history. Then the route passes Jaws Bridge (with views of Sengekontacket Pond) and moves into Oak Bluffs, where you stop to photograph the Gingerbread Cottages of the Old Methodist Campground: a uniquely preserved area. The drive along Oak Bluffs harbor and East Chop bluff loops back to Vineyard Haven and the Steamship Authority Terminal, where the tour concludes.
