The Experience

“You can always tell the locals by how they pour the champagne,” our server joked as she handed me a glass that was definitely more than half full. I’d barely stepped onto the boat in Marina del Rey and already felt like I was part of some sunny, slightly tipsy club. The marina itself smelled faintly of salt and sunscreen, and there was this low hum of people greeting each other—some birthdays, a couple of families wrangling strollers, one woman in a sunhat bigger than my carry-on. We drifted away from the dock before I even noticed we’d started moving.

The brunch buffet honestly surprised me. I expected something basic, but there were these little croissants that flaked all over my shirt (worth it), French toast that tasted just sweet enough, and some kind of torte that our table kept going back for—no shame. Our guide (I think her name was Jamie?) pointed out dolphins off the starboard side at one point. Everyone rushed over with their phones but I just watched—the light on the water made it hard to look away anyway. There was live music too, mellow stuff that fit perfectly with the slow roll of the yacht and the clinking glasses.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much with strangers or to feel so relaxed after just two hours on the water. The air out here is different—cooler than you’d guess for Los Angeles—and you get these little moments where everything’s quiet except for someone pouring another mimosa nearby.
