The Experience
Binoculars pressed to my face, I tried to spot a burrowing owl before anyone else. The truck rumbled along Marco Island’s sun-bleached streets, and our guide—Tom, who wore sunglasses even in the shade—kept up a steady stream of stories about old fishing families and how the island was just mangroves not that long ago. He waved at a neighbor mowing his lawn (everyone seemed to know him), then pointed out a house where some movie star supposedly stayed once. I’m not sure if it was true but it made us all look twice at the mailbox.
We hopped out near this ancient shell mound—I’d never heard of them before—and Tom explained how native Calusa people built these heaps centuries ago. The ground felt different under my sneakers, kind of crunchy and soft at the same time. There was this salty tang in the air, mixed with something earthy from the trees overhead. My kid got so into the scavenger hunt that she barely listened to Tom, but she did spot a gopher tortoise poking its head out of a sandy burrow. Honestly, I didn’t expect to care about tortoises but it was weirdly exciting.
I laughed when Tom cracked another dad joke (he warned us upfront) and someone’s phone went off with a pelican ringtone—felt oddly appropriate. We passed mega-mansions with manicured lawns and then suddenly we were watching green iguanas sunning themselves on a fence like they owned the place. The whole thing lasted about 90 minutes but I still think about that owl blinking at us from its little dirt cave. If you go, bring water—it gets hot fast—and don’t be shy about asking questions; Tom seems to know every odd fact about Marco Island.
