The experience
We almost didn’t make it in time: got lost between a pretzel stand and a sneaker shop (Mall of America is honestly a maze). By the time we found The Escape Game on the third floor, I was already laughing at how hopeless my sense of direction is. Our game guide, Marcus, greeted us like he’d seen this happen before. He handed us our mission sheet and gave us that “you’re gonna need teamwork” look. I guess he was right.
The room we picked was Prison Break: apparently their hardest escape room. The minute the door clicked shut, everything felt realer than I expected: old metal bars cold under my hands, the faint smell of marker from clues scribbled by past teams (or maybe that was just my imagination). There were seven of us, three strangers joined our group, and it took about five minutes before we were all shouting ideas over each other. Marcus popped in through the speaker now and then with hints, usually after we’d gone off on some wild tangent (“Nope, that’s not a clue, but nice try!”). It’s funny how quickly you forget you’re in a mall.
I still think about that moment when we finally cracked the last lock with thirty seconds left. Everyone cheered, even the guy who barely said two words until then. Afterward, we hung around for photos and swapped stories about which puzzles tripped us up most. I’ll admit I missed something obvious because I got distracted by a fake spider in the corner (don’t judge me).
