The Experience

The first thing I noticed was how the sun bounced off those brass stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame—honestly, it’s shinier than I’d imagined, even with a bit of gum stuck here and there. We rolled past the Dolby Theatre where they do the Oscars every year—it looks less glamorous in daylight but you can almost picture all those gowns and flashes if you squint. The open bus made everything feel close: you get this rush of warm air mixed with whiffs of street food from somewhere nearby (pretzels? Maybe churros). On Mulholland Drive, we stopped for that classic shot with the Hollywood Sign behind us. It’s one of those things you’ve seen a million times but somehow it hits different when you’re actually there. I didn’t expect to care much about Rodeo Drive but walking past all those high-end stores felt like stepping into another world—Prada, Versace, Chanel… There was a woman in sunglasses who looked like she belonged in a movie herself. We only had half an hour there (which is probably for the best for my wallet). The whole time, Sam kept dropping little bits about who lived where in Beverly Hills or which mansion supposedly has secret tunnels—hard to tell what’s true but it made me grin anyway.

The neighborhoods in the Hollywood Hills are wild—one minute you’re gawking at some mansion behind hedges, next you’re catching glimpses of Universal Studios’ Harry Potter castle in the valley below. The light changes so fast up there; by late afternoon everything felt golden and kind of unreal. Even now I still think about that view from Mulholland and wonder what it’d be like to wake up to it every day.
