The Experience

I’ll admit, I didn’t expect the smell of fresh donuts to be the first thing that hit me on a Las Vegas car tour. But there we were at Atomic Motors, coffee in hand, surrounded by rows of Chevys and Fords so shiny you could almost see your own surprise in them. Our guide—Mark, who seemed to know every bolt in town—waved us over just as someone fired up an old V8 in the workshop. That low rumble kind of vibrated through my shoes. Pink Box Donuts are apparently a thing here; I tried the one with pink sprinkles and got powdered sugar all over my shirt. Nobody cared.

Next stop was WelderUp, which is nothing like any garage I’ve seen back home. Steve Darnell’s rat rods look like they crawled out of some wild dream—rusty edges, skulls on the dash, weird little details everywhere. Mark told stories about late-night builds and TV crews getting in the way (he rolled his eyes at that). There was this moment when I ran my hand along a fender and it felt cool and gritty at the same time. The guys working there nodded at us but kept welding—just regular folks doing their thing while we gawked.

Count’s Kustoms was last, and honestly, it felt almost surreal walking past those cars you see on Counting Cars. Danny “The Count” wasn’t around (filming day), but our guide pointed out his favorite chopper anyway. There’s something about seeing these machines up close—the paint jobs almost glow under the shop lights—and you start imagining what it’d be like to drive one down the Strip at night. We snapped a few photos (Mark joked about charging us extra for “artistic direction”), then just stood around talking engines until it was time to pile back into the van for the ride back toward Treasure Island. It all went too fast—I still think about that V8 echoing in my chest.
