The Experience

You board a 40-foot sailing vessel called "Blue" at South Lake Tahoe and spend two hours on the water propelled by wind alone—no engine noise, no fuel smell, just sail and the lake itself. The yacht carries a maximum of 18 passengers, which means the deck doesn't crowd and you're not packed shoulder-to-shoulder like the larger tour boats that run 50+ people. Complimentary local beer and wine come aboard, along with bottled water and non-alcoholic options, so you're not buying drinks at a bar price while you sail.

The route shifts depending on wind strength and direction; the captain reads the conditions and adjusts where the boat can go. Because the cruise runs two hours, Emerald Bay stays off the itinerary—it's too far to reach and return in that window. What you get instead is the sailing itself: the work of trimming sails, the angle of the boat, the way the water changes color and temperature as you move across it. All captains carry United States Coast Guard licenses and the vessel meets Coast Guard safety certification, so the boat is equipped and the crew is trained for what can happen on open water.

A restroom is on board. Public transportation options are available near the departure point. Ages 5 and up are welcome; infants cannot come, and dogs are not permitted on public charters.
