The experience
Lake Norris is a darkwater lake ringed by dwarf cypress trees that give it an otherworldly look, and it sits inside one of Florida's most intact wildlife corridors. The shoreline holds more than 100 active osprey nests, and the water itself is home to river otters, alligators, turtles and various snakes. A professional, medically trained kayak guide leads the out-and-back paddle and points out what moves in the trees and water as you weave through the cypress. The guide adjusts the pace and challenge to match your fitness and what you want from the morning. You set the intensity.
You paddle your own kayak, a top-of-the-line boat with paddle and personal flotation device included. The 3-hour outing covers the route at a pace that lets you observe without rushing, and trail snacks and bottled water come along. Wear quick-dry clothes and water shoes. A swimsuit, warm layer for winter, rain jacket and sun protection are recommended. The guide speaks English or German, and children from age 3 are welcome.
