Step-by-step itinerary

Horseback trail ride at Lake Louisa

  • Explore natural, cultural, and historical sites

  • Learn about horses and park history

The Experience

Two guides lead your group over several miles of well-maintained trail throughout Lake Louisa State Park, sharing points of natural, historical and cultural significance as you ride. The horses are well-trained and accustomed to carrying riders of varying experience levels, and the pace is built around first-time riders—no prior riding skill is required. You'll move through a variety of natural eco-communities and terrain where wildlife, flora and fauna are visible from the trail.

The ride explores up to six miles of trail, which means you spend the afternoon moving through the forest by horseback rather than watching from a distance. Guides talk about the horses themselves as you ride—their temperament, training and how they move through the park—so the partnership between rider and horse becomes part of the experience rather than just the means to it. The forest canopy and the natural surroundings are what frame the ride, not a narrated tour of named attractions.

What’s included

  • Safety helmet.
  • guides who share information about the park's natural, historical and cultural features and the horses themselves.

Top questions

What's the actual riding like if I've never been on a horse before?

The trail ride is designed for first-time riders. The guides are experienced and friendly, the horses are well-trained and calm, and the pace is relaxed. You'll spend the ride becoming comfortable in the saddle and learning how your horse moves, not struggling with technique.

How much of Lake Louisa State Park do we actually cover?

The ride explores up to six miles of trail throughout the park, moving through different natural areas and terrain rather than staying in one section. The guides point out wildlife, plants and historical or cultural sites as you go.

What do the guides talk about during the ride?

Guides share information about the park's natural features, wildlife and plant life, as well as its historical and cultural significance. They also talk about the horses—their training, temperament and behavior—so you understand the animal you're riding.

Is there a minimum age, and can my 8-year-old ride?

Riders must be at least 8 years old. Children that age are welcome on the ride as long as they meet the physical fitness requirements and other safety criteria the operator outlines.

What's included in the ride, and what do I need to bring?

A safety helmet is provided. Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes; the operator will confirm other preparation details when you book. Parking fees are not included in the ride price.

What should I know about the physical demands of riding?

Riders should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness. The operator has specific requirements related to balance, spinal health and weight distribution in the saddle to keep both riders and horses safe. You'll confirm your fitness level and any health considerations when you book.
