“Don’t worry if you wipe out — it’s part of learning!” That’s what Keahi, our instructor, said when we first met him on the sand at Kahaluʻu Beach. I liked him right away. He had this easy way of laughing at himself and made us feel like messing up was half the fun. The sun was already bright but not too harsh, and there was this salty breeze that made everything smell like sunscreen and seaweed (not bad, honestly). We got reef shoes and these soft boards that felt massive under my arm — I almost tripped carrying mine but nobody seemed to notice.

Keahi walked us through how to pop up on the board right there on the beach, showing us how to keep our knees bent and look ahead instead of down. I kept forgetting which foot went forward (he just grinned and said “try both”). The private surf lesson felt way less intimidating than I’d expected — just me, my friend, and Keahi cracking jokes about how he still falls sometimes too. When we finally paddled out, the water was cool but not cold, kind of silky against my arms. There were a few other beginners around but it never felt crowded.

I wiped out more times than I can count (my nose is probably still full of salt), but then suddenly I did it — actually stood up for a second or two before splashing back down. Keahi whooped from behind me. It’s funny how those tiny victories feel huge when you’re learning something new. Afterward, we sat on our boards catching our breath while he pointed out turtles bobbing near the rocks. He handed us cold water from his bag — honestly, that tasted better than any fancy drink after swallowing half the ocean.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much or feel so proud over something so simple as standing up on a wave. Even now I catch myself daydreaming about that light bouncing off the water and Keahi’s voice shouting “there you go!” So yeah… if you’re thinking about a day trip surf lesson in Kona, don’t overthink it — just go for it.
