The experience

The day starts before dawn. You arrive 60 minutes early, board the Sandie Cat (Key West's newest and fastest catamaran), and settle into the open deck with fresh muffins, cereal, fruit and juice while the boat motors out to the reef. The speed matters: you reach the world's 3rd largest living coral reef faster than older boats, which means more time in the water instead of in transit.

Once you're in, the reef is the point. Sea turtles, angel fish, yellowtail snappers and parrot fish move through the coral in front of you. The water is clear enough that you see the whole scene without guessing at it. If you've never snorkeled before, the crew walks you through the basics: how to breathe, how to clear your mask, what to watch for. If you've done it a hundred times, you just go. All the equipment is there: mask, fins, snorkel. You don't bring your own or rent separately.

After you climb back aboard, there's a fresh water shower to rinse off the salt. Then the boat sails back to the dock, and that's when the open bar starts: unlimited draft beer, mimosas, wine, soft drinks and water on the big open decks. The whole trip runs three hours from start to finish.
