The Experience

We were already halfway out of Key West when I realized I’d forgotten to eat more than half a banana. Luckily, the crew had this big spread waiting — muffins still warm, juice that tasted sharper than I expected. The boat (Sandie Cat, someone said) was bigger than it looks in photos, with enough space to wander and not bump elbows. Our guide, Matt, handed me my mask and grinned when I asked if the water was “actually warm or just Florida-warm?” (It’s definitely Florida-warm.)

The reef came up faster than I thought — maybe 40 minutes? Wind in my hair, salt on my lips already. You could smell sunscreen everywhere but also something sweet, like fruit from breakfast lingering. The first time I dipped under, there was this hush — just bubbles and the sound of my own breath. Bright fish darted past; one looked straight at me before vanishing into coral. I tried waving at a turtle but it ignored me completely (fair). Matt floated nearby keeping an eye on everyone without hovering.

I didn’t expect to feel so calm out there, honestly. After we climbed back up — legs wobbly from flippers — someone passed around mimosas and beer. There was this easy laughter among people who’d just met an hour ago. Sun drying our skin while we sailed back toward Key West, hair tangled and salt-stiff. I’m still thinking about that quiet underwater moment days later — you know how some things just stick with you?
