The experience

The kayak, paddles and life jacket are waiting for you. The guide assigns single kayaks or tandem pairs depending on your group size. You push off into the mangroves off Key Largo and paddle through the tunnels: narrow passages where the trees arch overhead and the water stays clear enough to see down. The guide points out what lives here: birds nesting in the branches, fish moving through the shallows, turtles, and if you're lucky, manatees. Bottled water and snacks come along in the boat.

The 3-hour paddle is the whole day's shape. If snorkeling appeals to you, the guide can bring you to sections where you slip into the water and see the mangrove roots and the creatures moving through them from below. If you stay in the kayak the whole time, you're still moving through the same water and learning the same ecosystem. The choice is yours once you're on the water. The guide explains how the mangroves work: why they matter to the Keys, what depends on them, how they filter and protect.

Single kayaks are available. Groups of two or more are automatically assigned tandem kayaks at booking, but you can call after reserving to request single kayaks instead if you prefer to paddle solo.

What's the water like in the mangrove tunnels?

The water off Key Largo stays crystal clear, shallow enough to see the bottom in most places, and calm inside the mangrove passages where the trees block the open water. Snorkeling sections let you see the mangrove roots and the fish and turtles moving through them.

Will I see manatees or other wildlife?

Birds, fish, turtles and manatees all live in and around the mangroves. The guide points them out as you paddle, though sightings depend on the day and the season. The guide also explains what each animal does and why it needs the mangroves.

What should I bring or wear?

Wear clothes you don't mind getting wet and bring a hat, sunscreen, towel, waterproof camera or floating phone case, and bug spray if you have them. The guide and kayak are provided, along with bottled water and snacks.

How long is the whole experience?

The paddle itself runs 3 hours from start to finish, which is the time you're on the water in the mangroves. Plan for a bit longer if you want to change clothes or rinse off afterward.
