The Experience

You board a Zodiac RIB—the same style the Navy SEALs use—which gets you to Kealakekua Bay in minutes instead of the hour a larger boat takes. The boat's speed and shallow draft open access to sea caves, lava tubes, and dramatic coastline features that the 40–60-person vessels cannot reach. Small groups mean you're not jostling for space or waiting your turn at the water; you move at a pace that lets you actually see what's below.

Once in the bay, you snorkel the protected coral reefs around the Captain Cook Monument. The water is clear, and the reef structure here supports fish and coral you won't find in shallower tourist spots. Along the ride in and out, keep watch for wild dolphins or whales moving along the coast—sightings are not guaranteed, but they happen often enough that the crew knows where to look.
