The Experience

“If you see a honu, just let it pass — they’ve got right of way,” our guide Kaleo grinned as we wobbled into our kayaks at Napo‘opo‘o Pier. I was still fiddling with my life jacket when someone pointed out a pod of spinner dolphins arcing in the distance. The bay felt quiet but alive — water glassy, sun overhead but not too harsh, and that salty air you only get in Hawaii. We paddled slowly, Kaleo telling us bits about the old village that once stood here and the way the cliffs drop off so suddenly under the surface. I kept drifting off to stare at the green hills above Ka‘awaloa — honestly lost count of how many times I paused just to float.

The paddle across Kealakekua Bay took maybe 30 minutes? Hard to say — time slipped around out there. When we landed near Captain Cook’s Monument, I could smell guava on the breeze (or maybe it was someone’s snack). Getting into the water felt like stepping into a different world: coral heads below, fish darting everywhere, light shifting as clouds moved overhead. I tried to name some of the reef fish but mostly just floated and listened to my own breathing through the snorkel. At one point I looked up and saw Kaleo waving us over — he’d found an eel hiding in the rocks. Not sure why that made me laugh but it did.

After snorkeling, we sat on shore eating sandwiches from The Coffee Shack — honestly better than I expected for a “light snack.” Someone shared dried mango and we swapped stories about who’d swallowed the most seawater (I won). Kaleo told us about Captain Cook’s last days here; his voice got quiet for a second before he cracked a joke about British tea. The paddle back was easier somehow, maybe because we’d all loosened up or maybe because it felt like leaving something behind. Back at Napo‘opo‘o Pier, I realized my arms were tired in that good way you get after doing something real.
