The experience

Rockport's Little Bay becomes a different place after dark. You and a partner climb into a tandem clear kayak outfitted with an LED light system that lets you pick from seven colors and settings: your own vibe, as the operator puts it. The lights turn the water beneath you into a lens. Small fish of assorted species move through the shallows, and shrimp sometimes jump aboard, drawn by the glow. Your guide navigates the southwest end of Little Bay, starting in shallow water and moving north along Highway 35 toward the manmade oyster reefs that dot the bay.

The route takes you past the reefs where stone crabs settle, and on the return you may paddle over the top of some of them. Your guide points out landmarks and shares the history and facts about the area as you paddle. The whole outing runs about 75 minutes. You'll have a paddle with a lanyard, a USCG life jacket, a flashlight and an emergency whistle. The kayak comes with its own flare kit. No bug sprays are allowed on the water.

Is this one for you?Book this if you want a night activity that feels unlike typical kayaking: the lights and clear hull turn the underwater world into the main event, and the shallow oyster reef route keeps the paddling manageable for anyone with decent fitness who wants to see what's below rather than just paddle across the surface.
