Kayak and paddleboard adventure

The experience

What wildlife might you actually see on the water? The creek channel runs between sandstone and limestone ridges where beaver build lodges, turtles sun themselves on the banks, and migratory birds pass through. Great blue herons, eagles and owls show up, though sightings depend on the season and time of day. Your guide shares what to watch for and explains the geology that shaped these cliffs: the Virgin Anticline formation and the shale beaches you paddle past.

You launch from the operator's beach at Quail Creek State Park with a kayak or stand-up paddleboard, a Coast Guard-approved vest, paddle and ankle leash already provided. The guide gives basic instruction to all paddlers and extra attention to anyone who needs it. The paddle itself is interactive: you're operating the equipment the whole time, not watching from a boat. Swimming and light shoreline hiking are optional. Some departures include cliff jumping at different points if you want it.

The tour runs two to three hours and wraps back at the launch point. Bottled water and a food bar (Clif, Kind, Bobo's or similar) are included. After you're done, you can stay and order from the Dig In Grille on-site. The guide may also have time to show petroglyphs near the shop before you leave. Tours run in English or Spanish depending on which option you book.

What you see depends on the season and time of day, but the guide knows the spots where animals are most likely and shares information about their behavior and the geology that supports them.

What happens if I'm not comfortable in the water?

The operator has adapted equipment and paddling technique for guests with health and physical considerations. Contact them before booking to discuss what you need, and they'll work with you to find a way to make the adventure comfortable.
