Oyster tasting and kayak tour
- Group welcome and paddle introduction
- Kayak along rocky shore observing wildlife
- Visit floating dock and taste fresh oysters
- Kayak back to meeting point
The experience
Two hours splits into four parts: a twenty-minute welcome and paddle introduction on shore, then roughly thirty to forty minutes paddling about one mile along the rocky shore of Little Bay, a tidal estuary near the mouth of the Piscataqua River. Binoculars are available on request to watch for shorebirds and other aquatic wildlife as you move through the water. The route takes you past shellfish beds and the kinds of habitats that draw the animals you're watching for.
At Hidden Coast Shellfish's floating dock, you leave the kayaks for a thirty-minute break. A staff member walks you through how they grow and harvest oysters sustainably, then you taste up to half a dozen oysters picked fresh that morning. If oysters aren't your thing, let the operator know before you start and they'll have other snacks ready instead. The paddle back covers the same distance and gives the guide time to point out the history of the area and any wildlife you spot on the return.
A trained kayak guide leads the whole activity in English or Spanish. The kayak, paddle and lifejacket are all provided, so you only need to show up ready to paddle. The exact meeting location arrives after you register.
