The experience
You start in the Atchafalaya Basin, one of the largest intact wetland ecosystems in the country, where the guide, Capt. Albert "Al" Wilson, a local who trained in wetland science at LSU: leads you into cypress forests that tower over the water. The paddle takes 2.5 hours and moves at a pace that lets you watch for wildlife: alligators, turtles, wading birds, owls, bald eagles and nutria move through their habitat around you. Paddling quietly is what makes the difference. The swamp reveals itself only when you're not rushing through it.
Along the way you learn about Cajun culture and the natural history that shaped this landscape: how the wetlands work, why they matter, what lives here and how. The guide speaks English and Spanish, so the commentary reaches whoever is in the boat. All kayaks, paddles and life jackets are provided, and tandem kayaks are available if you want to paddle as a pair. The tour welcomes children from age 3, and no previous kayaking experience is required. The guide handles the instruction.
