Step-by-step itinerary
Paddle and wildlife watching tour
- Paddle North Indian River Lagoon
- Look for dolphins and sea turtles
- Spot sting rays and aquatic birds
- Stop at islands to walk and play
- Return to starting location
The experience
You'll paddle the North Indian River Lagoon with a local guide who knows where the wildlife congregates. Dolphins are the most common sighting, but the lagoon also holds sea turtles, stingrays, and aquatic birds. Manatees appear occasionally. The route covers about 1.5 miles at a pace that lets you watch the water and scan for movement rather than rush through. If the group wants to stop, there are islands nearby where you can stretch your legs, walk around, or wade in the shallows. Bring water shoes if you plan to get in.
The tour starts and ends at the same location, so there's no scramble to a second parking area or a long shuttle back. You get a kayak and paddle, a life vest with whistle, and dry bags to keep your wallet, keys and phone safe while you're on the water. Single kayaks have a weight limit of 250 pounds. Tandem kayaks (available on request) hold up to 450 pounds combined, which works well for families or anyone who prefers a two-person boat. Groups stay small, capped at six kayaks, so you're not paddling in a crowd.
Public transportation options are available nearby if you're traveling without a car. The tour runs 1.5 hours, which is long enough to explore but short enough to fit into a morning or afternoon without eating your whole day.
