The Experience

The water drops 80 feet into a pool that's been the backdrop for Fantasy Island, Castaway, and Tropic Thunder, and standing there you understand why filmmakers kept coming back to Kauai. The tour runs in an air-conditioned minibus that stops at the actual locations where those movies filmed, and at each one the guide plays clips so you can see the scene as it appeared on screen, then look at the real landscape without the Hollywood filter. It's a strange thing, watching an actor run through that exact spot you're standing in.

The Wailua River is next — where they shot Jungle Cruise, Outbreak, and Raiders of the Lost Ark — and then Opaekaa Falls, which showed up in Donovan's Reef and Lt. Robin Crusoe. The stops keep coming: Kapa'a Town (Jurassic Park), Moloaa Bay (Gilligan's Island), the beach where they filmed Six Days Seven Nights. Hotel pickup is included from most areas of Kauai — though if you're staying in Poipu there's an $11 surcharge per person, and the tour doesn't service Hanalei or Princeville.
