Kauai Honey and Bee Tour: Taste Fresh Honeycomb
Suit up and taste honey the way it was first made
Inside the Hive is a guided beekeeping activity on Kauai where you wear a protective bee suit, hold a frame from a live hive, extract honeycomb, and taste fresh honey and seasonal pairings led by the farm's master beekeepers. The experience takes place in a section of Lydgate Farms never before open to the public and runs about two hours. Children must be at least 7 years old, and you'll need to comfortably walk roughly 100 yards and stand for 15 minutes.

The experience
You arrive at a corner of Lydgate Farms on Kauai's East side that's never been open to the public before. After the beekeepers help you into a full protective suit and gloves, you step up to an active hive. The frame you hold is warm and heavy with bees moving across it. This is where the honey actually lives. You'll extract honeycomb by hand, taste it straight from the comb the way it was first enjoyed, and move through a flight of Hawaiian honeys, each one different: some floral, some dark, some tasting of the season's fruit.
The tasting menu builds as you go. Cacao tea with honey, honey-roasted macadamia nuts, and seasonal pairings of local fruit with honey show you how the farm's own harvest connects to what you're tasting. The beekeepers (who also run the farm's cacao tour) teach you the history of beekeeping in the Hawaiian Islands and walk you through every step of how honey gets made. It's a two-hour activity, and the walking and standing are built into it: you'll cover roughly 100 yards and need to stand comfortably for about 15 minutes. Wear closed-toe shoes with calf-length socks, bring sunscreen and water, and dress in something you don't mind wearing under the suit.
